That spring, intermittent is 1. a karst spring with a pulsating flow, caused by the presence within the rock of cavities and siphons fed by a subterranean watercourse. when the cavity is full, the siphon is complete and causes a pulse of water to issue from the spring. this diminishes or empties the water supply in the cavity and no further water is discharged from the spring until the system is reactivated. the discharge is said to be a reciprocating spring when a reduced level of flow is maintained between pulses [19]. 2. a spring flowing at irregular intervals [16]. synonyms: (french.) source temporaire, source intermittente; (german.) intermittierende quelle, periodische quelle; (greek.) thialepousa pege; (italian.) sorgente temporanea, sorgente intermittente; (russian.) peremezajuscijsja istocnik; (spanish.) fuente intermitente, fuente temporal; (turkish.) kesintili kaynak; (yugoslavian.) periodicko vrelo, potajnica, obdobni izvir. related to spring, ebb-and-flow; spring, periodic.?

Mine Water Solutions in Extreme Environments, including karst

Dates: From 15 Apr, 2013 till 17 Apr, 2013
Location: Lima, Peru

International Conference "Mine Water Solutions in Extreme Environments" is being organized in Lima, Peru, in April 2013.

Mine Water Solutions in Extreme Environments is the first of a new conference series to examine and share successes in mine water management in extreme environments. The thematic areas include:

  • Extremely dry settings
  • Extremely wet settings
  • Extremely cold settings
  • Extremely complex hydrogeological conditions (e.g.karst)
  • Extremely challenging geochemistry

The Conference will provide a forum for presentation and discussion about successful practices that enable responsible mining to be undertaken in challenging environments, while minimizing water use and/or preserving water resources. All aspects of mine water management, including hydrology, hydrogeology, diversion, containment, water conservation, minimization of water quality impacts, seepage interception, and treatment may be addressed. Management of water associated with mine dewatering, waste rock and tailings are of particular interest.
