For the first time the karst research books at the former Ljubljanian Auersperg “Prince’s” library were put at the limelight by using the recently found manuscript catalogue 1668 (transcribed in 1762) and sales catalogues of 1982 and 1983. During the ba­roque times of Volf Engelbert Auersperg the science of karst was not born yet. The researchers had to wait for another century until the most fundamental facts about karst were proved by Carniolan scientists Hacquet, Gruber, and others. Nonetheless Volf collected several important books about karst with famous authors Aldrovandi, Ferrante Imperato, Johann Joachim Becher, Tommasso Buoni, Jakob Joannes Wenceslaus Dobrzensky de Ni­gro Ponte, and Athanasius Kircher. The special concern was put on the Count Volf Engelbert and his brother Prince Janez Vajkard interests in karst phenomena and their mutual influence on the younger visitors of their Ljublanian palace, especially Schönleben and Valvasor. Volf and Janez owned several manors at now Slove­nian and Croatian karst. Janez Vajkard personally managed the first systematic research of subterranean animals in Postojna cave as a part of his Postojna Manor.

The topographical work Germania Austriaca, seu Topographia Omnium Germaniae Provinciarum, Augustissimae Domui Austriacae Haereditario Jure Subjectarum1, which was published first in 1701 and again, with some modifications, in 1752 and 1759 gives an insight into the knowledge about caves within the Austrian learned societies in times before Enlightenment took place. The latin book, originally written by Wenzel Karl Earl of Purgstall while ascribed to the Jesuit Carolo Granelli in the later editions, includes only few but detailed descriptions of some caves and karst features, taking up several pages of each edition. Purgstall wrote in a very picturesque style, which was typical for the age of Baroque. The topography shows how common knowledge of our days is influenced by standard literature of former centuries: most of the mentioned places are still regarded as outstanding natural phenomenons today. With respect to the sparse but already intensively analysed cave texts of those days, it was a surprising experience to discover this so far unnoticed standard topography of the 18th century for historical speleology.

On the basis of the constructivist culture theory the traditional research interests of the history of science were renewed in the 1990ies. The article bases upon an oral presentation at the Austrian Society for the History of Science. In contrast to the dominating micro historic studies in the history of speleology, the paper provides an overview of the human activity in caves from ancient world to the beginning of the 19th century. This includes not only the scientific study of caves, but also sightseeing tours, the investigation and opening of caves undertaken by scientific laymen. The focus doesnt lie on single explorers and their attainments, but concentrates on the changes in the perception and interpretation of the underground cavities as well as on the practice of the visitors and explorers. The results show an intimate correlation between the scientific and cultural discourses to the interior of the earth. The people in the antiquity and Middle Ages interpreted caves as sexualized areas, which refer to social taboos. Simultaneously caves were used for protection and as a place for religious meditations. During the Baroque period they became the location of bizarre objects, admiring promenades and aristocratic celebrations. In the Romantic period the netherworld was seen as an area of inwardness and edification. Geologists and paleontologists discovered them as archives of natural history; artists recognized caves as areas of spiritual revelation, where ancient myths were updated.
