QUARTZITE PLATEAUX OF THE RORAIMA FORMATION (GRAN SABANA - VENEZUELA) - The high sandstone-quartzite plateaux of the Roraima period situated in the Gran Sabana region of south-east Venezuela have some specific macro- and micro-geomorphological characteristics. On one hand, this Precambrian sedimentary cover includes some spectacular relief consisting of high structural plateaux affected by major anticlines, synclines, and monoclines, partly dismantled by erosion. On the other hand, and on a smaller scale, pseudo-karst have developed on the surface (karren) and at depth (caves, shafts). Several hypotheses are put forward in an attempt to explain the genesis of this pseudo-karst.

PSEUDO-KARST IN SANDY-CLAY (LAS BARDENAS NAVARRA-, SPAIN) - The spectacular badlands of Las Bardenas are situated south of the Navarra province (NE Spain); they develop in the sandy-clay (Oligo-Miocene) of the tertiary Ebra basin, with a semi-arid climatic context (<400 mm/year). Pseudo-karstic landforms have been observed near mini-canyons: sinkholes, pits, caves, natural bridges... This morphology of mechanical origin is possible because the running waters disappear underground into the decompression fissures generated on the edges of canyon cliffs. Yet, in a few caves, the gallery is made directly in the mass of sandy-clay, without the help of joints, cracks or fissures ("piping"). This recent pseudo-karst and badlands are the obvious consequence of the historical destruction of forest during the Middle Age.

KARST FEATURES IN QUARTZITE OF SOUTH AFRICA - The author describes karst features developed in quartzite and also, but to a lesser extent, in weathered diabase and in wad. In quartzite, the karst is due to weathering along joints and bedding planes, producing softer areanaceous boundaries. Later, vadose caves form by piping in the weathered material, starting at a spring and progressing upstream. The karst features include dolines, swallow-holes, and caves, grouped in very localised systems. Over most of the quartzite plateaus, however, real karst features are absent and the drainage remains superficial. The only ubiquitous features, reminiscent of lapies, consist of pinnacles left after erosion of sand. As most of the time they are not associated to deep karst systems, the author proposes that they should not be considered as karst features. Other caves are developed in weathered diabase and dolomite (wad), sandwiched between resistant quartzite layers. They result from the erosion of these soft layers. The author is of the opinion that the term karst rather than pseudokarst should be used to describe this morphology developed in silica and silicate rocks. The reason is that not only the features produced compare well with the ones observed in " soluble rocks " (limestone, gypsum, etc.), but that the genetical process is very similar. It is suggested that the term pseudokarst should be used only in cases were the genesis is different.

The observation of several forms in the Precambrian formations, in Tertiary and Quaternary deposits brings us to propose a model of topographic evolution mainly generated by a pseudo-karst. This latter is developed in sedimentary deposits and in the lithomargin, in relation with fracturation of the basement

La grotte de Mbilibekon, un pseudo-karst dans la couverture latritique du craton du Congo (Ebolowa, Cameroun), 1995, Vicat J. P. , Leger J. M. , Lips B. , Lips J. , Piguet P.
The Mbilibekon cave, located in the Ebolowa area, is part of a pseudo-karstic network developed in the lateritic alteration cover of the Ntem basement. The surveyed network, 220 m long, is the largest in Cameroon. Numerous bats (Rhinolophus) live in this cave. The network directions are similar to the basement faulting which drains the phreatic water table. The age of the pseudo-karst is probably younger than the dry climatic episode that occurred in Cenfral Africa near 2,500 years BP.

Central Africa, underground karstic caves are to be found in precambrian carbonated series, but also in quartzite as in the case of Burundi. The arenisation process which took place during very wet periods of intense biological activity may explain the origin of these caves and of karstic landforms such as pavements and pinnacles.

Plutonic and metamorphic rocks of South Cameroon show numerous surficial and deep pseudo-karstic features. Most surficial landforms are recent. The deep features are fossils and posterior to the Cretaceous peneplain surface. All the studied pseudo-karstic features are related to the plagioclases dissolution by acid rainwaters.

The carbonated and cuirass areas of the Julliminden basin plateaus show many closed-in, circular or oval depressions. Though noticed early by geologists, they have been described only recently. These depressions are similar to the known karstic forms such as dolines, ouvalas and poljes. Some of them, such as the valleys with bayonet-shaped lines and the karst with residual hillocks, are typical. The lithologic differences that characterize these plateaus make it possible to make assumptions on the origin of these pseudo-karstic forms: dissolution of limestones, sandstones (Continental terminal) and weathered rocks of the basement, and withdrawing.

In the paleokarstic features of the carboniferous limestones (Synclinorium of Namur Hainaut, Belgium) new endokarstic forms have been discovered and named "pseudo-endokarsts". From a morphological point of view, the pseudo-endokarst looks like a gallery. But, in fact, it results from an in-situ alteration: the "ghost rocks". The study of the sedimentary cross-section in the "pic--glace cave" described in this article offers new understanding of endokarst genesis. Dynamic flows are not any more the only way to initiate karstification.
